n occasion, I have been told that people like the way I dress — that they like my style. Even my daughter’s boyfriend has said I have “swag.” Nat-
urally, I’m quite flattered by this. I don’t feel as though I do anything special; I simply dress the way that I like and use what makes me feel comfortable.
I do tend to dress against the “island norm,” however, and have been told I have “sprezzatura.” Google it. I’m pretty sure my style comes from my parents. My mom was a seamstress who worked in her family’s tailor shop in Ja- pan along with her brother.
And my dad, while in the
Army, was in the Counter-
intelligence Corps (CIC),
so he rarely wore a uni-
form. Rather, he dressed
like Don Draper from Mad
Men. I still have some of
his ties and jackets, which
never go out of style.

And I’ve mentioned this before but I also worked at McInerny at Ala Moana selling clothes in the men’s de- partment. We had all the major design houses under one roof and clothed many of the local fashion plates.
That being said, I tend to take great care of how I dress, whether at work or in the public eye. However, there’s a first time for everything and recently, I had an accidental fashion faux pas that erased my entire style reputation.
I guess there’s a first time and last time for everything. Take cars, for example. There have been the most stylish cars in the history of automobiles. But if you were born in the ’90s and beyond, you probably never heard of this car fad, nor seen one. I’m talking about car vinyl roofs.
I don’t know the true history of why they were so pop- ular, as in essence it was a “fake” convertible top. I just remember that it was the rage and we wanted our dad to buy a car with a vinyl roof, which he did just in time for me to use for junior/senior prom. It was a green Chevrolet Caprice with a black vinyl top.
Today, I wouldn’t be caught dead driving one of those, although it’s probably a collectors’ item and worth a mil- lion bucks. That brings me to my recent fashion faux pas. It was pointed out to me at work last week and gave ev- eryone the biggest laugh since forever.
