2 HAWAI‘I ISLAND MIDWEEK OCTOBER 19, 2022
Established in 1938, March of Dimes is a nonprofit that leads the fight for the health of moms and babies. We sup- port research, lead programs, and provide education and advocacy so every family can have the best possible start. Our organization began with President Franklin Roo- sevelt’s struggle with polio and how we pioneered the first-ever vaccine research. Since then, we have contin- ued our mission to help mil- lions of babies survive and thrive.
This year has been a re- building year for March of Dimes Hawai‘i market. With a brand-new team, we’ve aimed to create awareness and produce a local impact. Our goal is to increase our partnerships so that we can drive our movement to help moms and babies locally. It has been a great year being actively involved with or- ganizations and being in the community.
The March Goes On For Hawai‘i Moms, Babies

25 people — a mix who have given birth or provid- ed services to pregnant and/ or postpartum people on Hawai‘i Island — to gather experiences, perspectives and suggestions to improve access to healthcare. This initiative was brought about through our Mom and Baby Action Network, which is the branch of March of Dimes that works toward birth equity by centering the voices and experiences of communities. Big Island (Hawai‘i County) was cho- sen because within our state,
it has the highest preterm birth rate — although it does interchange with Honolulu County. Through this project
we will be working toward figuring out successful ways to integrate education into

WeliveonanIslandwhere11of13climatesoftheEarth (or some similar ratio) are represented. The topography and vegetation of our Island mimics almost every state. On the East side of the island, lands are predominately overgrown cane fields or triple canopy forests. Typically, it’s impossible to know exactly what’s on your land until it’s cleared. A Manager in my previous office once insisted we walk every piece of property with our clients.
On his first trip to the field, he realized this was impossible. Whileallattemptsaremadeto disclose known imperfections, there are many

The State is happy to provide mapping information if they have it. For most buyers, it’s really just a coin toss. It’s best to assume there are tubes on the property. A private Geologist can be consulted but the cost may exceed the value of the land. Of course, not everyone considers a lava tube an imperfection. Whether your tubeisapleasantsurpriseoranunanticipatedchallenge, it’s good to know that you also own the portion of the tubeunderyourproperty. Ifyouareawareofthetube onyourproperty, youmaywanttoresearchlegislation pertaining to its use. As disgusting as it may sound, some owners use lava tubes as makeshift cesspools. They are alsousedasarubbishdump.Becausethesesystems are often connected (many go for miles), spelunkers (cave explorers) love traversing them making illegal usesespeciallydisgustingandabigNO-NO! Forthis reason (and others) REALTORS® request records for wastewater systems. For older cesspools, the report

Even my own cesspool was not as shown on my cesspool card. Newer systems (cesspools or septic) will have an approval for use acknowledged by their wastewater engineer.
