HAWAI‘I ISLAND MIDWEEK 3
                                       Spoiler Alert!
Please read no further unless you want to know details of a currently streaming movie that you probably have not heard of nor watched. This is your last chance to turn the page and, yes, I am actually telling you not to read my column unless you want to know all about the movie Fresh.
You have been officially warned and I take no responsi- bility from here on out. Wait — what? You’re still reading? OK, here it goes. I work with a really great team of people. I think our publications reflect their hard work and I have nothing but praise for them.
Although I am old enough to be some of their fathers, we all get along really well and from what I can see, enjoy each other’s company. I’m a baby boomer II and the only one on the staff. The rest of the team are Gen X, millennials and Gen Z. For reference, my son is a millennial and my daughter a Gen Z.
Even with this age diversity on staff, we share a lot of the same interests. For instance, we all love movies. In be- tween work crises, we sometimes talk about recent movies we’ve seen or TV shows that we’ve watched.
A few weeks ago, I was speaking with two of our Gen Z staffers — assistant editor Ginger Keller and staff writer Joc- elyn Lansangan — about recent movies we’ve seen and our personal recommendations. In spite of our age differences, we have somewhat similar cinematic tastes and interests. I can recommend great movies that I’ve seen, and they can recommend movies that I may otherwise never see.
I took it upon myself to watch all the movies nominated this year for the Academy Award for Best Picture. I was giving mini reviews to Ginger and Jocelyn about what movies they might enjoy. In turn, they both had a movie that they both saw and really enjoyed, and wanted me to watch it to get my take.
It was a movie called Fresh, and it stars actor Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky the Winter Soldier in the Captain America movies. They both said it was kind of a rom-com. In spite of that, I promised I would watch it that evening.
At home, I announced to my wife and daughter that we were going to have a TV dinner and watch this movie highly recommended from two young women that I work with. Meals prepared, we sat down and I streamed the movie from Hulu. Turns out Stan is a serial killer and the movie is about cannibalism.
The next day, when I saw Ginger and Jocelyn, I told them goodbye as my wife and daughter told me to quit my job while I still could.
