MARCH 23, 2022 HAWAI‘I ISLAND MIDWEEK 3
HISessions was a YouTube channel that started 11 years ago in my living room. My husband, Dave Kusumoto, and his friend, Jon Yamasato, decided to see if they could make music videos with a group of friends. It wasn’t the first seemingly random idea they had, but it definite- ly was the one that lasted the longest. Since posting our first video, the channel has grown to over 400,000 subscribers, and about 1.5 million views a week. It’s served as a launch- pad for many new musical art- ists. We never imagined where this path would lead. I serve as a camera person and editor on the HISessions crew. There are about 10 of us.
After seeing a few peo- ple’s music careers take off after coming on our show, we realized there might be a greater purpose in what we’re doing. We started defining our mission as platforming local artists on a global stage (the internet). Only recently did we

embarkonanewadventure— to extend that missional think- ing to a community where it might make an even bigger impact.
HISessions is hosting a music contest called SPARX Hawai‘i Music Contest for students in four Kaʻū- Keaʻau-Pāhoa schools: Kaʻū High, Keaʻau Middle, Keaʻau High, Pāhoa High & Interme- diate. The contest is meant to encourage students to explore areas that spark their interest — like music. Following that spark could lead to following their passion and creating their own path in life. The goal is to uplift the community through the students. We hope to con- nect promising student singers and musicians in the KKP area with an audience. The contest is accessible to any qualifying student musician from any of the four select KKP schools, who records a video of them- selves performing a song, and then submits it between now and the deadline on April 1 at sparxhi.com.
At a HISessions shoot with guests Keauhou, crew members Kawika Lopez (camera director), Carissa Kano (host), Ben Duncan (camera), Lance Lopes (camera), Jon Yamasato (partner), Dave Kusumoto (partner), Shayna Kusumoto (camera and editor), Dani Yoshimoto (camera), Vance Morimoto (sound director) and Dayton Watanabe (sound assistant) pose for a photo. The contest is an educa- tional outreach component of the ‘Aha Lamakū ‘Oia‘i‘o federal grant administered by the Pacific Literacy Consor- tium, College of Education,
University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. ALO targets supple- mental educational support to secondary students in four schools in Hawai‘i Island’s KKP complex area.
This is now what keeps me up at night and gets me up in the morning — this feeling that we’ re about to start something great. It’s not just a pet project for our own
enjoyment anymore. We’re about to help make a real dif- ference in people’s lives. And not just the student, but their whole ‘ohana, and possibly even their whole community.

Even though the postman may never deliver mail to your door, helping an emergency responder find your home could become far moreimportantthanmaildeliveryeverwillbe. Besides, it’sthelaw. Section14-84oftheHawaiiCountyCode, requires that addresses be posted on every property, even temporaryones. Afterall, buildinginspectorsneedto inspect the correct property. Property owners are required toposttheaddressbythedriveway. Thenumbersmust
be readable at all times. When a home has a mailbox, the addressshouldbepostedonbothsidesofthebox. Other guidelines apply to shared driveways and apartment/ condo buildings. It stands to reason that, for REALTORS®, the posting of street numbers is fairly important. It’s more thanjustanissueoffindingtheproperty. Sometimesthe addresstheownerusedforyearsmaybeincorrect.
